The Thing II (1995)

Alter ego figures make for interesting variants on our favorite heroes. From Mego in the 70s to Kenner in the 80s and 90s to the current trend of often maskless movie adaptions, having a super hero in his or her civilian guise opens up more play patterns for kids. It also gives us old folks unique variants to collect.

I suppose you can’t call the Thing in a trench coat disguise an alter ego, but for a guy mostly stuck in rocky form, it’s the best he can hope for. For Ben, the look goes all the way back to his first appearance in the opening pages of FF #1, and the disguise has been imitated by the like of other legendary heroes, most prominently the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Hey, if you’re gonna cop a style, steal from the best. The fit on the coat isn’t perfect, but it gets the job done, and the soft goods material is a much better choice than plastic to main poseability.

Underneath the disguise lurks a very accurate representation of the animated Thing. Early versions of Ben Grimm more closely resembled his usual comic appearance. While this version of the character might not fit in with other comic based Marvel characters, he’s a well done variation, and the sculpt has a lot of personality. I can almost her him bellyaching at the Human Torch.
